Instagram's actual ratios and the compression it applies
Instagram accepts three feed ratios and crops or downsizes everything else.
Supported feed formats: - Square 1:1 — 1080×1080. Always safe, always the grid thumbnail. - Portrait 4:5 — 1080×1350. Occupies the most vertical screen space in feed, which is why it typically earns more attention per post. - Landscape 1.91:1 — 1080×566. The smallest presence in feed. - Reels and Stories 9:16 — 1080×1920, a separate surface from the feed.
The grid crops everything to square. Whatever ratio you post, the profile grid shows a centre square. A 4:5 portrait with text near the top or bottom loses that text in the grid view.
Instagram's re-compression. Uploads wider than 1080 pixels are downscaled server-side, and the result is re-encoded aggressively. To keep the most quality: 1. Export at exactly 1080 pixels wide — never wider, never narrower. 2. Use sRGB. Images in Display P3 or Adobe RGB shift visibly toward flat, dull colour after processing. 3. Keep the file under about 1 MB; larger files are compressed harder, not preserved better. 4. Avoid fine gradients and dark, flat backgrounds, where Instagram's encoder produces visible banding.
Text safe areas. The username bar overlays the top of a Story, and the caption sits below a feed image, but on Reels the right-hand action column and the bottom caption area cover roughly the outer 15%. Keep type inside the central band.
