A Story is 1080×1920 pixels, 9:16. The full frame is visible on most phones, but the interface covers a predictable band at the top and bottom on every device.

Device variation. Phones with aspect ratios other than exactly 9:16 (many are 19.5:9 or 20:9) crop the sides or letterbox the top and bottom. The central safe zone accounts for this; the outer edges do not.
Preparing the file: 1. Design at 1080×1920 exactly. Larger files are downscaled and re-encoded. 2. Export as JPG at quality 85–90, or PNG if the Story is mostly flat colour and type. 3. Keep the file under 4 MB; Instagram's ceiling for photo Stories is 30 MB, but heavier files are compressed harder. 4. Use sRGB, as with feed posts.
