Convert Resume PDF to Editable Word Document
Need to update your resume but only have the PDF version? ImageGates converts your PDF resume to an editable Word document while preserving formatting — headers, bullet points, columns, and styling. Edit freely, then export back to PDF when ready.
What survives the PDF-to-Word conversion of a CV
A PDF stores glyph positions, not paragraphs. Converting back to Word reconstructs a document structure that was never in the file, so some things always transfer cleanly and others never do.
Usually preserved: body text, reading order in single-column layouts, bold and italic runs, bullet characters, hyperlinks, and approximate font sizes.
Usually damaged: multi-column layouts (text from two columns interleaves), text boxes and sidebars, icon fonts used for contact details, tight custom line spacing, and any typeface not installed on your machine — Word substitutes a similar font and the line breaks shift.
Why this matters for job applications. Many applicant tracking systems parse text rather than layout. A CV built as a two-column designer template often parses into scrambled order, which is why plain single-column CVs frequently score better regardless of how they look to a human reader.
A practical workflow: 1. Convert the PDF to Word to recover the text. 2. Rebuild the layout as a single column with standard Word headings, rather than fixing the imported text boxes one by one. 3. Replace icon-font contact details with plain text — an ATS reads "email:" but not a glyph. 4. Keep dates in a consistent, spelled-out format such as "March 2024". 5. Export back to PDF for human recipients, and keep the .docx for portals that require Word.
If the PDF was scanned rather than exported, there is no text layer at all to recover — the page is an image, and conversion produces an image inside a Word file. Those need OCR, not conversion.

Guide
Updating a resume is a common task, but often you only have the final PDF version. Recreating a resume from scratch in Word is time-consuming. ImageGates bridges this gap by converting your PDF resume into an editable Word document.
Common resume editing scenarios: - Adding new work experience - Updating skills and certifications - Changing contact information - Tailoring the resume for a specific job application - Adjusting formatting for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems)
ATS-friendly resume tips: 1. Use simple, clean formatting (ATS can't read complex layouts) 2. Use standard section headings: "Experience," "Education," "Skills" 3. Include keywords from the job description 4. Avoid tables, columns, and text boxes 5. Save as .docx (most ATS-friendly format) or simple PDF
After conversion workflow: 1. Convert PDF to Word with ImageGates 2. Edit content in Microsoft Word or Google Docs 3. Proofread carefully — check for any formatting shifts 4. Export back to PDF using our Word to PDF tool 5. Test the PDF by selecting text to ensure it's not image-based
Frequently asked questions
Will my resume formatting be preserved?
ImageGates preserves text, headings, bullet points, and basic formatting. Complex layouts with multiple columns or graphics may need minor adjustments after conversion.
Can I convert a scanned resume PDF?
Scanned PDFs (image-based) cannot be converted to editable text without OCR. If your PDF is text-based (you can select text in it), ImageGates will convert it perfectly.
Is my resume data kept private?
Yes, 100%. All conversion happens in your browser — your resume is never uploaded to any server. Your personal information stays completely private.
