Page size, orientation and order when combining photos
Combining photos into a PDF looks trivial until the recipient prints it and finds every image cropped or floating in a corner. Three settings determine the outcome.
Page size. A PDF page has a physical size. If you place a 4:3 photo on an A4 portrait page, you get large white margins top and bottom. Choose: - A4 / Letter portrait for document scans and anything that will be printed and filed. - A4 / Letter landscape for wide photographs. - Fit-to-image when the PDF is only ever viewed on screen — each page then matches its photo's aspect ratio exactly and nothing is wasted.
Orientation per page. A mixed set of portrait and landscape photos on uniform pages leaves half of them small. Either rotate the landscape shots to match, or accept per-image page sizing.
Order. Files are added in the order they are listed, which is usually filename order, not capture order. Phone filenames such as IMG_0099 and IMG_0100 sort correctly; names like "photo (1)" and "photo (10)" do not. Rename before combining if page order matters — for a multi-page document it always does.
Resolution and size. Photos are embedded at their native pixel size. Ten 12 MP photos produce a PDF of 30–60 MB, above most upload limits. Resize each image so the longest edge is about 2000 pixels before combining; that is still 300 DPI across an A4 page.
Margins. For documents that will be printed and hole-punched or bound, leave at least 10 mm — printers cannot print to the paper edge, and a borderless layout gets clipped.
