Resize YouTube Thumbnails – 1280x720
YouTube thumbnails are the single biggest factor in whether someone clicks your video. At 1280x720 pixels (16:9), a well-designed custom thumbnail can double or triple your click-through rate. ImageGates resizes your images to YouTube's exact thumbnail specifications.
Thumbnails that still work at 168 pixels wide
YouTube specifies 1280×720 pixels, 16:9, under 2 MB, in JPG, PNG, GIF or BMP. That is the upload requirement. The design requirement is different: the most common place your thumbnail appears is the mobile search result, where it is displayed at roughly 168 pixels wide — about 13% of the uploaded size.
Consequences of that shrink: - Body text disappears. Three to five very large words is the working maximum. - Fine detail becomes noise. A wide establishing shot reads as grey mush; a face at 40% of the frame reads instantly. - Low-contrast colour pairs merge. Test any text colour against the background by shrinking the whole thumbnail to 200 pixels wide.
Safe areas: the bottom-right corner is covered by the duration badge on every surface, and the bottom edge is covered by the progress bar on already-watched videos. Keep faces and text clear of the lower right quarter.
Preparation order that keeps text crisp: 1. Design at 1280×720 exactly — designing larger and downscaling softens text edges. 2. Export as PNG if the thumbnail is mostly flat colour and type; JPG artefacts cluster around hard-edged lettering. 3. If PNG pushes past 2 MB, reduce the colour palette rather than switching to JPG. 4. Compress last, and check the result at 200 px wide before uploading.
Channel art has entirely different constraints — the safe area is 1546×423 within a 2560×1440 canvas. See channel art sizing.

Guide
YouTube thumbnails are arguably the most important image on the internet for content creators. A great thumbnail can increase click-through rate from 2% to 10% — a 5x improvement in views for the same amount of impressions.
YouTube thumbnail specifications: - Dimensions: 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9) - Minimum width: 640 pixels - File size: Under 2MB - Formats: JPG, PNG, GIF (static) - Custom thumbnails require verified account
High-CTR thumbnail formula: 1. Face with emotion: Thumbnails with expressive faces get 30% more clicks 2. Bold text: 3-5 word overlay in large, high-contrast font 3. Color contrast: Use complementary colors that pop against YouTube's white interface 4. Clear subject: One main focal point, not a busy collage 5. Before/after: Split thumbnails showing transformation perform exceptionally well
Common mistakes: - Text too small (unreadable at thumbnail size) - Too many elements competing for attention - Low contrast that blends with YouTube's UI - Misleading thumbnails (hurts long-term channel health) - Using auto-generated thumbnails instead of custom ones
