Resize Images for Twitter/X Header Banner
Your Twitter/X header banner is the largest visual element on your profile. At 1500x500 pixels (3:1 ratio), it needs to look great on both desktop and mobile. ImageGates resizes any image to these exact dimensions for a pixel-perfect header.
Header dimensions and the profile-picture overlap
X (Twitter) headers are 1500×500 pixels, a 3:1 ratio, with a maximum file size of 5 MB for JPG, PNG and GIF.
What gets covered. The profile picture overlaps the lower-left of the header — roughly 200×200 pixels of it on desktop, positioned about 30 pixels from the left edge. On mobile the overlap sits proportionally similar but the header itself is cropped tighter vertically, losing roughly 15% from the top and bottom.
Practical safe area: keep essential content in the central horizontal band, clear of the left 350 pixels and clear of the top and bottom 60 pixels. A logo centred in the full 1500×500 canvas usually survives; a logo in the lower left does not.
Responsive cropping. The header is displayed at different heights depending on window width — the platform crops vertically rather than letterboxing. A design that relies on a full-bleed horizon line near the top or bottom will be cut inconsistently across devices.
File preparation: 1. Build at 1500×500 exactly. 2. Export as PNG when the header contains text or flat colour; JPG artefacts around lettering are conspicuous at this width. 3. Keep it under 2 MB even though 5 MB is allowed — the platform re-encodes, and a smaller source that is already clean survives better than a heavy one. 4. Test with your actual profile picture in place before committing; the overlap is easy to underestimate.
Dark mode. The header sits against a dark background for a large share of users. A design with a white edge shows a hard boundary; a transparent-looking gradient will not blend, because the platform composites onto its own background, not yours.

Guide
Your Twitter/X header banner is prime digital real estate — it's the first thing visitors see on your profile. A well-designed header communicates your brand, current campaign, or personality at a glance.
Twitter/X profile image specifications: - Header banner: 1500 x 500 pixels (3:1) - Profile picture: 400 x 400 pixels (1:1, displayed as circle) - In-feed images: 1600 x 900 pixels (16:9) - Card images: 1200 x 628 pixels
Header design safe zones: On desktop, the header is partially covered by the profile picture (bottom-left) and the profile info (bottom). On mobile, more cropping occurs at top and bottom. Design within these constraints: - Safe zone for desktop: Center 1300x350px area - Safe zone for mobile: Center 1100x300px area - Avoid putting text or logos in the bottom 150px (covered by profile info) - Avoid putting critical content in the leftmost 200px (behind profile picture)
Frequently asked questions
What size is a Twitter header image?
The recommended Twitter/X header size is 1500x500 pixels (3:1 aspect ratio). The file should be under 5MB in JPG, PNG, or GIF format.
Why does my Twitter header look cropped?
On mobile, Twitter crops the header differently than on desktop. Keep important content in the center 1200x300px area to ensure it displays correctly on all devices.
Can I use a GIF as my Twitter header?
Twitter accepts GIF headers but displays them as static images. The first frame of the GIF will be used. For animated headers, you'd need Twitter Blue/Premium.
