Where a résumé photo belongs — and where it doesn't
Whether to include a photo at all is regional, and getting this wrong costs more than any sizing mistake.
Regional convention: - United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland: omit the photo. Anti-discrimination screening practices mean many employers discard CVs with photos, and some applicant tracking systems strip images entirely. - Germany, Austria, Switzerland: a professional photo is still conventional on the "Bewerbungsfoto" and is often expected. - France, Spain, Italy, Portugal: common but optional. - Japan, South Korea, China: expected, with prescribed sizes — Japan's rirekisho photo is 30×40 mm, Korea's standard is 35×45 mm.
Sizing for each output: - Printed European CV photo: 35×45 mm at 300 DPI equals 413×531 pixels. - Japanese rirekisho: 30×40 mm at 300 DPI equals 354×472 pixels. - Digital-only CV: 400×400 pixels square is enough; anything larger inflates the PDF for no gain.
Keeping the file size sane. A 5 MB photo embedded in a Word document produces a CV that email gateways strip or bounce. Compress the photo to under 200 KB before inserting it — at 400 px wide the quality difference is invisible in print and on screen.
Crop to the correct ratio first, then resize, then compress. Reversing that order re-compresses the same pixels twice and produces visible blocking around the collar and hairline. If you also need the photo for LinkedIn, produce the square version separately rather than reusing the 35×45 mm crop.
