Listing photo sizes and what MLS systems enforce
Property listing platforms each specify their own dimensions, and photos uploaded at the wrong size are downscaled or cropped rather than rejected — so the damage is invisible until a buyer sees a soft, badly framed image.
Common requirements: - MLS systems (US/Canada): typically 1024×768 minimum, many now accept and prefer 2048×1536. 4:3 remains the dominant ratio, which is why real-estate photography still shoots 4:3 rather than 3:2. - Zillow: 1536×1024 recommended, minimum 1024 on the longest side. - Rightmove and Zoopla (UK): 2048×1536 recommended, 4:3. - Airbnb: 1024×683 minimum, landscape strongly preferred; the platform crops to a wide banner for the first image.
Why 4:3 rather than widescreen. Interior photography needs vertical coverage — floor to ceiling — that a 16:9 crop removes. A 16:9 photo of a room shows more wall and less of the space.
Preparation that holds up: 1. Straighten verticals first. Converging walls are the single most obvious sign of an amateur listing photo, and correcting them crops the frame, so do it before sizing. 2. Crop to exactly 4:3 rather than letting the platform choose. 3. Resize to the platform's recommended size, not its minimum. 4. Compress to under 1 MB per image; a 30-photo listing at 5 MB each loads slowly on mobile and platforms compress harder in response.
Blurring for privacy. Neighbouring windows, car number plates and framed family photographs inside the property should be obscured before upload — see real-estate blur.
