Getting the crop right for passport and visa offices
A passport crop is not simply a square. Every issuing authority defines where the head must sit inside the frame, and a technically square photo with the head in the wrong place is still rejected.
Head-height windows used by the largest authorities: - United States (2×2 in): crown to chin between 1 and 1⅜ inches — 50% to 69% of the frame height. Eye line 1⅛ to 1⅜ in from the bottom. - Schengen (35×45 mm): face height 32 to 36 mm, roughly 70–80% of the frame — noticeably tighter than the US crop. - United Kingdom (35×45 mm): crown to chin 29 to 34 mm, so a Schengen-tight crop is often too close for a UK application. - India (35×35 mm): square like the US but with the face filling 70–80% of the frame.
Because these windows differ, one crop cannot serve two countries. Crop from the original full-resolution file each time rather than re-cropping an already cropped photo — every additional crop throws away pixels and pushes you below the minimum resolution.
Practical sequence that avoids rework: 1. Straighten first if the camera was tilted, then crop. Rotating after cropping shaves the corners and changes the head position. 2. Centre on the bridge of the nose, not the chin — centring on the chin drifts the head upward and clips the crown. 3. Leave a small margin above the hair. Authorities measure to the top of the head, not the top of the hairstyle, but a clipped crown is an automatic rejection. 4. Check the result against the country rules with the photo checker before printing or uploading.
