What an ID-photo background actually has to be
"White background" is a shorthand. Most authorities specify a plain, light, evenly lit background with no shadow, no texture and no pattern — and several of them do not want pure white at all.
Background rules that differ by authority: - United States: white or off-white. A pure #FFFFFF background is accepted, but the subject must not blend into it. - United Kingdom: light grey or cream is preferred over white so the outline of the head stays visible. - Schengen states: light grey or light blue is explicitly named in the ICAO-derived guidance most consulates apply. - India: plain white for the Passport Seva portal. - Australia: plain, light-coloured, contrasting with the applicant.
Automated background replacement solves the harder half of the problem: it removes the room, the furniture and the shadow cast on the wall behind you. What it cannot fix is a shadow on your face, which comes from the lighting at capture time.
Getting a clean cut-out on the first attempt: 1. Stand at least a metre away from any wall so no shadow lands behind you. 2. Avoid clothing that matches your hair colour at the shoulders — that is where edge detection is weakest. 3. Tie back or smooth flyaway hair; fine strands against a busy background are the most common source of a ragged edge. 4. Do not wear white against a white replacement background if the authority requires the outline to be visible.
After replacement, review the edge around the ears and shoulders at full zoom, then run the photo checker — it measures background uniformity, not just colour.
