US Passport Photo Requirements: Size, Background and Digital Rules
Official guidance checked October 17, 2026
A US passport photo must show you as you look today: in color, facing the camera, against a plain white or off-white background, without filters or digital changes. For a paper application, submit one 2 × 2-inch (51 × 51 mm) print taken within the last six months. Eligible online renewals instead require an original digital upload. The distinction matters: a file prepared for a visa application is not automatically suitable for a passport renewal.

The official US passport photo size and head position
For paper passport applications, the Department of State specifies a square print measuring 2 × 2 inches, conventionally stated as 51 × 51 mm. Measure the finished print with a ruler: a square image on a screen does not prove that it will print at the correct physical size. A 35 × 45 mm photo used by many other countries is not the American passport format.
The head, measured from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must be between 1 inch and 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm). Center the head, keep it fully visible and face forward without tilting. The official composition template places the eyes 1⅛–1⅜ inches (28–35 mm) above the bottom edge. Check both head size and placement rather than just filling a square with a face.
A 600 × 600-pixel file printed at 300 pixels per inch yields a 2 × 2-inch square; that is a useful printing calculation, not a universal passport upload rule. Do not enlarge a tiny thumbnail and assume the extra pixels restore detail. Use a sharp original with enough space around the head and shoulders, then verify the print separately.
Background, lighting and image quality
The US passport photo background must be plain white or off-white, without shadows, textures or objects. Red, blue and patterned walls do not meet the US guidance, even if another country accepts them. The photo should reproduce natural skin tones accurately and show clear facial features; black-and-white images, heavy color casts and blurry pictures are unsuitable.
As a practical shooting tip, stand several feet from the background and have another person use soft, even light from in front of you. This can reduce wall shadows and the distortion of a close selfie. Avoid a bright light directly overhead or far to one side, which can hide part of the face. Watch for blown-out skin, very dark eyes and a shadow immediately behind the head.
Retake a badly lit photo instead of trying to rescue it with a beauty filter, skin smoothing, background replacement or AI editing. Current State Department guidance asks for the original, unedited photo without digital changes. ImageGates background tools are useful for other image tasks, but replacing the background is not a shortcut recommended here for a US passport submission.
Expression, glasses, clothing and head coverings
For a paper application, keep a neutral expression, mouth closed and both eyes open and visible. Look directly at the camera rather than to the side or down at a phone screen. Online renewal instructions also say to avoid showing teeth. A broad smile, squinting or a tilted head can make the image unsuitable; a relaxed neutral expression is the safest way to follow the current wording.
Remove eyeglasses. A narrow medical exception may apply if they cannot be removed for medical reasons, supported by a signed statement from a doctor. Do not treat this as permission to keep ordinary prescription glasses on: review the official exception and examples before relying on it. Glare, tinted lenses or frames hiding the eyes create additional problems.
Wear clothing you normally wear daily. Uniforms and clothing that looks like a uniform are not appropriate, apart from religious clothing worn daily. Hats and head coverings are generally not allowed unless worn for religious or medical reasons with the required supporting statement. A permitted covering must leave the full face visible and must not cast shadows on it.
Headphones, wireless hands-free devices and similar items should not appear. If you normally wear a hearing aid or similar device, the official guidance allows it. For any exception, read the exact government instructions rather than assuming that an online checker can decide whether your documentation is sufficient.
Printed photos versus digital photos: choose the right application method
For a first passport, an in-person application or a renewal submitted with a paper form, follow the printed-photo guidance. Submit one color photo on matte or glossy photo-quality paper, not ordinary office paper. It must not have holes, creases, smudges or other damage. Follow the form's instructions for attaching it; do not improvise extra staples through the face.
For eligible online renewals, use the digital-photo upload guidance instead. Accepted formats are JPG, JPEG, PNG, HEIC and HEIF, and the file should be between 54 KB and 10 MB. Submit a color photo taken within the last six months, saved on the device used for the application. Do not scan a print or take a photograph of a printed photo to create the upload.
The online renewal system lets you reposition or crop your photo within the application and checks basic requirements. Start with the original, unedited image, with the head centered and fully visible and the lower frame around the shoulders where they meet the arms. Do not apply a visa-specific 240 KB cap or a DV Lottery 600 × 600-pixel requirement to this process.
Passing the government's basic upload check is not a guarantee that the photo or application will be accepted after review. Online renewal also has eligibility conditions unrelated to the photograph. Check the official renewal page before choosing that method; ImageGates cannot renew your passport, submit the government application or decide eligibility for you.
Common US passport photo rejection reasons
A photo can hold up an application when it is old, altered, incorrectly sized, poorly framed or hard to identify. Start with the basics: is it a new photograph taken within six months, not a scan of your existing passport? Is the head the correct size in the finished print? Are the full face and both eyes clearly visible?
Background shadows, uneven lighting, glare on glasses, a distracting wall and an unnatural skin tone are frequent avoidable problems. Tight crops can cut off the top of the head; distant framing can make it too small. Do not stretch the face to fit a square. Retake an unsuitable original rather than editing facial features or adding missing hair and shoulders.
Check the actual item you submit. A good-looking preview can still produce a blurry, wrongly sized or damaged print. Online, check the original file format and size before uploading, and respond to the portal's instructions if it requests another image. If the Department of State asks for a replacement, follow the notice and deadline instead of submitting the same unchanged photo.
US passport photos for babies and children
Children need their own recent photos; another person must not be visible in the image. For babies, a useful official suggestion is to lay the baby on a plain white or off-white sheet or cover a car seat with such a sheet. Make sure the support does not cast shadows and no adult hands, toys or blankets cover the face.
The guidance recognizes that infants cannot always meet an adult pose. A baby's eyes do not have to be open. Do not extend that exception to older children or assume every child can look away. Consult the Department of State baby and child examples for the age and situation, and take several calm attempts rather than altering the child's face afterward.
Keep the same printed size and background requirements, unless the official instructions specify otherwise. Children under 16 cannot use the adult renewal process; they apply in person each time. Read the child application instructions for consent and documents, which are separate from the photo rules. A suitable photograph alone does not complete the child's application.
How to prepare your photo using ImageGates
Begin by choosing paper application or online renewal. Take a real, recent photograph against the required background with an ordinary camera mode and no filters. Keep the original safe. Open the U.S. passport photo size page to review dimensions and preview framing; do not start by editing an old passport scan or a social-media portrait.
For a paper photo, check the 2 × 2-inch layout, head position and the resulting print scale. ImageGates provides sizing and preview tools and paid clean-export options. Browser-local photo preparation does not itself send the image to the Department of State. Free previews contain a watermark and are not submission-ready; inspect an eligible clean export and the final print before using them.
For online renewal, retain the original unedited digital photograph and use the official application's crop or reposition controls. Do not assume that every output from a passport photo maker online is appropriate. In particular, avoid background removal, facial retouching and generative changes for this submission. An online tool can help you understand dimensions, but cannot guarantee government acceptance.
Use the image resizer only where resizing is appropriate to your task, and consult the guide to file size and resolution when comparing pixels with print dimensions. Background removal is linked as a general image utility, not as a compliant US passport editing step. ImageGates is independent and is not affiliated with the U.S. government.

Passport photo near me: in-person services and a digital alternative
If you prefer help taking and printing a photo, check nearby pharmacies, shipping stores, photographers or passport acceptance facilities that actually offer photo services. Availability, opening hours and prices vary; confirm the service before traveling. ImageGates does not operate a local photo studio and does not claim to locate a nearby provider.
Taking a photo at home is another option when you can meet the official requirements. Have someone else take it, use a plain background and compare the result with the government examples. For paper applications you still need a correctly sized, high-quality print, whether printed at home on photo paper or by a provider. For eligible online renewal, the original digital image can go directly into the official portal.
Choose the route that produces a truthful, well-lit original, not simply the cheapest or fastest edit. If you cannot avoid shadows or achieve sharp detail, a photographer may be more useful than repeated software corrections. Review any service's result yourself: paying for a photograph does not transfer responsibility for following the application instructions.
Final checklist before you submit
Confirm the application method first. For paper forms: one recent color print, 2 × 2 inches, head 1–1⅜ inches from chin to crown, and correct eye placement. Measure the printed photo, ensure the face is not stretched and check that it is sharp on photo-quality paper. Do not rely solely on a screen ruler.
For either method: plain white or off-white background; even lighting; no shadows or distracting objects; a forward-facing head; clear eyes; required expression; and no filters or digital alterations. Remove glasses unless an official documented exception applies. Recheck head coverings and any medical or religious documentation against the government's wording.
For online renewal: original digital photo, one of the listed formats, 54 KB–10 MB, no scan of a print, and cropping handled in the official application. For babies, review the specific exceptions. Finally, open the official guidance again before submitting. These checks reduce avoidable mistakes; they cannot promise acceptance or replace a government review.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a US passport photo?
For a paper application, 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm). The chin-to-crown head height must be 1–1⅜ inches (25–35 mm). Online renewal uses its separate digital upload instructions.
What is the required US passport photo background?
Plain white or off-white, free of shadows, textures and objects. Take the photo against that background rather than digitally replacing it.
Can I take my own US passport photo?
Yes, if it meets the official requirements. Have another person take the photo from several feet away, use even lighting and compare it with the official examples.
Can I wear glasses in a US passport photo?
Generally no. A limited medical exception requires a signed doctor's statement. Check the government guidance before relying on that exception.
Can I smile in a US passport photo?
Current paper-photo guidance calls for a neutral expression, mouth closed and eyes open. Online renewal says to avoid showing teeth. A relaxed neutral expression follows these instructions.
Can I use a digital photo for a US passport application?
Eligible online renewals accept original JPG/JPEG, PNG, HEIC or HEIF files between 54 KB and 10 MB. Paper applications still need a printed photo; a digital file alone is not a substitute.
What causes a US passport photo to be rejected?
Examples include an old or altered photo, wrong print size or head position, shadows, blur, glasses without an exception and an unsuitable background. Follow any replacement-photo notice.
Can I use an online passport photo tool?
A tool can help review size and framing, but cannot guarantee acceptance. Do not use filters, facial retouching, background replacement or AI edits. For online renewal use the original photo and official crop controls.
What are the requirements for babies and children?
The child must be alone in the photo with the required plain background. Babies may have closed eyes. Review official child-photo examples; children under 16 apply in person each time.
Where can I get a US passport photo near me?
Check local photographers, pharmacies, shipping stores or facilities offering photo services. Confirm availability. ImageGates is an online preparation tool, not a local photography service.
